A collision between outfielders Cito Gaston and Johnny Grubb going after a routine fly in the fifth inning enabled Joe Morgan to race around the bases for an inside-the-park homer, scoring Pete Rose ahead of him, to help the Reds defeat the Padres, 5-4. The Reds, who also had six doubles in the game, counted what proved to be their winning run when Bench and Tony Perez hit two-baggers in the sixth.
