. . . where the 1970s live forever!

Ken Brett posted his first N. L. shutout and snapped Glenn Beckert's 26-game hitting streak as the Phillies won the opener of a twi-night doubleheader, 3-0, but the Cubs came back behind the hitting of Billy Williams to take the nightcap, 7-6. Brett allowed only three hits.

Williams whacked a single, double and homer for the Cubs in the second game and drove in four runs. Pat Bourque, recalled from Wichita (American Association) to replace Joe Pepitone, who was traded to the Braves, had two hits and drove in one run with a double. The Cubs counted what proved to be their winning run in the fifth when Jose Cardenal doubled, Randy Hundley singled and Paul Popovich hit a sacrifice fly. [The Sporting News]
