Jon Matlack, making his first start since being hit in the forehead by a line drive May 8, pitched six scoreless innings, but the Pirates tagged reliever Tug McGraw for two homers and beat the Mets in 10 innings, 4-1. Showing that he was not gun-shy, Matlack struck out first the three Pirates' batters of the game. However, he allowed nine hits before being removed. Rusty Staub homered for the Mets' run in the sixth and Bob Robertson tied the score with a circuit clout in the ninth.

Rennie Stennett opened the 10th with a single and took second on a sacrifice by Gene Clines but was out at third on a grounder by Dave Cash. Manny Sanguillen beat out an infield hit and Willie Stargell then smashed his 11th homer of the season for the winning runs. [The Sporting News]
