Playing before a record crowd of 55,555 for a Bat Day doubleheader, the White Sox split with the Twins, winning the first game, 9-3, and losing the second game, 3-0. Wilbur Wood gained his 10th victory of the season for the White Sox in the opener, with slugging support by Carlos May and Bill Melton, who drove in seven runs between them. Melton homered with a man on base in the first inning and May with two aboard in the fourth. Ray Corbin and Ken Sanders combined to pitch a shutout for the Twins in the nightcap. Bobby Darwin, who had three hits and drove in two runs in the first game, provided the victory cushion by smashing a homer with a man on base in the seventh inning. [The Sporting News] |
