A two-run single by Luis Aparicio and two-run double by Carl Yastrzemski enabled the Red Sox to defeat the Orioles, 4-1. Luis Tiant, who was the winner on a four-hitter, beat the Orioles for the fifth straight time over a two-season span.

After the Orioles scored their run in the first inning on a double by Al Bumbry and single by Boog Powell, Jim Palmer protected the lead until the seventh when Rick Miller doubled, Dwight Evans and Tommy Harper walked and Aparicio hit his single.
