Harmon Killebrew had his first three-hit, three-RBI game of the season to help the Twins defeat the Royals, 8-6. Lou Piniella hit the first grand-slam homer of his major league career in the third inning when the Royals erupted for five runs to take a 5-1 lead.

A homer by Larry Hisle, walk to Rod Carew and singles by Tony Oliva and Killebrew gave the Twins two runs in the fourth and they went ahead with four more in the sixth on a walk to Hisle, singles by Carew and Oliva, double by Killebrew, sacrifice fly by Bobby Darwin and single by Danny Thompson. After the Royals picked up a tally in the sixth, Killebrew accounted for his third hit and third RBI with a single in the Twins' half. [The Sporting News]
