Alan Foster pitched a five-hitter and came out ahead in his duel with Ron Reed when the Cardinals scored three runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Braves, 4-1. Ralph Garr homered for the Braves' run. The Cards, after tying the score with the aid of an error by Reed in the sixth, opened the eighth with a single by Ted Sizemore. Tim McCarver sacrificed.

Following an intentional pass to Ted Simmons, Jose Cruz doubled to drive in Sizemore. Reed then passed Luis Melendez intentionally to load the bases. Ken Reitz forced Simmons at the plate, but Mike Tyson singled to drive in two runs. [The Sporting News]
