Led by John Mayberry, who drove in five runs, the Royals powered their way to a 13-3 victory in the first game of a doubleheader, but the Red Sox gained a split by winning the second game, 7-2. Mayberry hit two doubles and two singles in the lidlifter in support of Gene Garber, who made his first start of the season. Ed Kirkpatrick homered with two men on base and Gail Hopkins with one aboard for the other big blows in the Royals' attack.

In the nightcap, the Red Sox had a pair of three-run innings. Carl Yastrzemski knocked in two tallies with a single in the third and Orlando Cepeda followed with a run-scoring single.
