Scipio Spinks, who had been sidelined by an inflamed shoulder, made his first start since May 1 and combined with Diego Segui to beat the Reds, 2-0, for the Cardinals' seventh straight victory. Spinks had previously lost four decisions. The triumph represented poetic justice for the young righthander, who damaged his knee sliding into Johnny Bench in a game with the Reds last July 4 and was out of action for the balance of the season.
