Tony Taylor singled on Jim Kaat's first pitch of the game and Mickey Stanley homered on the lefthander's next delivery to spark the Tigers to an 8-3 victory over the Twins. Before the first inning was over, the Tigers added two more runs on an error, single by Willie Horton, passed ball and double by Frank Howard.

Joe Coleman gave up the Twins' runs on homers by Jim Holt, George Mitterwald and Danny Walton before leaving the game after 6 1/3 innings. Coleman was credited with his 10th victory and John Hiller, who relieved, gained his 10th save. [The Sporting News]
