The Cardinals posted a 4-2 victory to beat Jerry Reuss for the third time in four meetings since trading the lefthander to the Astros. The Cardinals scored twice in the first inning on singles by Joe Torre and Ted Simmons, a wild pitch and single by Luis Melendez.

After the Astros tied the score, Jose Cruz tripled in the fifth and counted on a single by Mike Tyson. Reggie Cleveland sacrificed. Lou Brock was safe when Reuss took his bouncer to the mound and threw late to second, trying to catch Tyson off base. Torre then hit a two-out single to drive in the clinching tally.
