Fritz Peterson and Sparky Lyle combined to outduel Nolan Ryan as the Yankees defeated the Angels, 2-0. Peterson had trouble with his control, walking five and throwing two wild pitches, but allowed just two singles in the first seven innings. Lyle held the Angels hitless in the last two stanzas.

The Yankees reached Ryan for a run in the fourth on a single by Bobby Murcer, his theft of second and a single by Ron Blomberg. Thurman Munson walked in the fifth, took third on a single by Gene Michael and scored the last run on a sacrifice fly by Horace Clarke. [The Sporting News]
