The Pirates jumped on Jack Billingham for three runs in the first inning and went on to defeat the Reds, 4-3, for their sixth straight victory. Dave Cash and Manny Sanguillen led off with singles and Richie Hebner doubled to drive in the first run. Willie Stargell walked to load the bases.

The second run scored on a groundout by Al Oliver and the third followed when Bob Robertson was out on a smash off Billingham's leg. Billingham was forced to leave the game. The Pirates added what proved to be the deciding run off Tom Hall in the fourth on singles by Oliver and Mily May around a pass to Robertson. [The Sporting News]
