Pinch-hitting with the bases loaded, Tim McCarver smashed reliever Fred Gladding's first pitch for a grand-slam homer in the eighth inning to carry the Cardinals to a 6-2 victory over the Astros. The Cardinals, who were trailing, 2-1, started meekly in the eighth when Ted Sizemore walked with one out and was forced for the second out by Joe Torre.

Dwain Anderson ran for Torre and raced home with the tying run when Ted Simmons doubled. An intentional pass to Jose Cruz and infield hit by Luis Melendez loaded the bases. When McCarver was announced as the pinch-hitter for Ken Reitz, the Astros brought Gladding to the mound in a move that backfired with McCarver's slam. [The Sporting News]
