Catfish Hunter yielded only three hits and pitched the Athletics to a 3-1 victory over the Red Sox, who were able to keep the A's scoring down by executing five double plays. The Red Sox had Hunter on the ropes in the second inning, filling the bases on singles by Orlando Cepeda and Danny Cater and walk to Tommy Harper but scored only one run on a sacrifice fly by John Kennedy.

The A's tied the score in the third when Angel Mangual tripled and Dick Green singled. Bert Campaneris singled in the sixth, advanced on a sacrifice and a long fly and scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball. Gene Tenace added the clincher with a homer in the seventh. [The Sporting News]
