The Reds, after falling behind in the 10th inning, 5-2, exploded for four runs in their half, three counting on a homer by Johnny Bench, to defeat the Mets, 6-5. Willie Mays, making his first start for the Mets since May 8, walked with two out in the first inning and scored on a double by Rusty Staub. The Reds counted twice in their half on a single by Pete Rose, double by Tony Perez and single by Dave Concepcion, but the Mets pulled even in the sixth when Felix Millan doubled and Jim Fregosi singled.

In the 10th, the Mets loaded the bases and Duffy Dyer smashed the tie with a triple, only to have Tug McGraw and Phil Hennigan fail in relief. Richie Scheinblum walked to open the Reds' rally, took third on a single by Rose and scored on a wild pitch by McGraw. When McGraw walked Joe Morgan, Hennigan took over and was the victim of Bench's homer. [The Sporting News]
