The Twins scored four runs in the 15th inning, three of them unearned, to win the first game of a doubleheader, 7-3, before powering their way to a 13-9 victory in the second game to complete a sweep of the Indians. Jerry Johnson, pitching in relief for the Indians in the lidlifter, retired 12 straight batters before walking Larry Hisle to open the 15th. After a wild pitch and infield out by George Mitterwald, who had a homer earlier in the game, Frank Duffy booted a grounder by Jim Holt and threw wildly for two errors as Hisle scored the tie-breaking tally. Rod Carew was passed intentionally, Danny Thompson singled to score Holt and Harmon Killebrew then doubled to drive in Carew and Thompson. In the nightcap, Holt drove in four runs with a pair of homers and Steve Braun connected for the circuit with two men on base to lead the Twins' attack. The Indians put on a power show of their own in the ninth inning with round-trippers by Jack Brohamer, Oscar Gamble and Charlie Spikes. Spikes also homered in the first game. [The Sporting News] |
