Although defeated by the Padres, 4-3, on a homer by Ivan Murrell in the ninth inning, the Cardinals ended their long homestand with 11 victories in 13 games. From a low point of 5-20, the Cardinals' record now was 24-26.

Two unearned runs helped the Redbirds take a 3-0 lead before the Padres tied the score in the sixth inning. Wayne Granger, relieving Reggie Cleveland, gave up a run-scoring single by Rich Morales and then did not allow another hit until beaten by Murrell's homer in the ninth. [The Sporting News]
