Steve Carlton, who had a 6-8 record at this time last year en route to a 27-victory season for the Phillies, brought his current mark to 6-7 by defeating the Padres, 5-1. Carlton gave up singles by Ivan Murrell and Nate Colbert and passes to Fred Kendall and Rich Morales to force in the Padres' run in the fourth inning.

The Phillies came back with a pair in their half on a triple by Willie Montanez, singles by Greg Luzinski and Tommy Hutton and a sacrifice fly by Del Unser. The other runs followed in the sixth on singles by Montanez and Hutton and doubles by Unser and Larry Bowa. [The Sporting News]
