Dramatic relief work by Wayne Granger enabled the Cardinals to win the opening game of a doubleheader, 4-3, but the Braves came back behind the pitching of Roric Harrison, who allowed only one hit in eight innings, to win the second game, 5-2. Ted Simmons drove in three of the Cardinals' runs in the lidlifter with a sacrifice fly and single. The Braves had the bases loaded with two out in the ninth when Granger was summoned to face Hank Aaron. Hammerin' Hank fouled off eight straight pitches as the tension built up before flying out to end the game.

In the nightcap, Harrison hit a homer in his own behalf to start the Braves' scoring in the third inning. Ken Reitz tripled in the sixth for the only hit off Harrison and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jose Cruz. Harrison was lifted after walking Ted Sizemore in the ninth and the Cards added their other run after Danny Frisella relieved on a single by Joe Torre and sacrifice fly by Luis Melendez.
