Ron Bryant became the first N. L. pitcher with 10 victories this season when the Giants defeated the Mets, 2-1. The Giants scored once on singles by Tito Fuentes and Garry Maddox and a double by Ed Goodson in the fourth inning before Dave Kingman homered in the fifth to supply what proved to be the winning run. The Mets' marker came on singles by George Theodore and Ted Martinez around an infield out in the home half of the fifth.

Randy Moffitt saved the game for Bryant, taking over with two men on base and two out in the ninth and retiring Willie Mays on a grounder. Earlier in the game in the third inning, Maddox made a key catch, leaping and reaching above the left field fence to pull down a bid by Felix Millan for a homer. [The Sporting News]
