Striking out nine, Bob Gibson moved into second place on the majors' all-time list with a career total of 2,862 while pitching the Cardinals to a 12-4 victory over the Reds. Gibson passed Jim Bunning and now was second only to Walter Johnson's 3,508. The Cardinals backed their veteran ace with a 14-hit attack, including homers by Ken Reitz, Lou Brock and Jose Cruz.
