Frank Howard, who was batting only .194 as the Tigers' designated hitter, homered off Wilbur Wood with Willie Horton on base in the eighth inning to defeat the White Sox, 6-5. The Tigers, who had failed to score in 22 consecutive innings, ended their drouth when Mickey Stanley homered in the first.

The White Sox had 17 hits, but their only extra-base blow was a double by Dick Allen. With the score tied, 4-4, Horton opened the eighth with a single. Wood then retired the next two batters before yielding Howard's first homer of the season. [The Sporting News]
