A bases-loaded triple by Steve Garvey, the Dodgers' productive pinch-hitter, produced an 8-6 victory over the Phillies. Steve Yeager of the Dodgers and Willie Montanez of the Phillies each hit a three-run homer, but the Phillies held a 6-4 lead going into the eighth inning when a single by Willie Davis and pass to Ron Cey led to the removal of Steve Carlton with one out.

Mac Scarce relieved and was greeted with a run-scoring double by Tom Paciorek. After an intentional pass to Bill Russell, Steve Yeager struck out, but Garvey then batted for Doug Rau and came through with his triple.
