Ed Kranepool smashed his first homer since last August 29 and Willie Mays, who went into the game with an .094 average, rapped two singles to help the Mets defeat the Giants, 5-4. A double by Duffy Dyer, single by Mays and double by Rusty Staub gave the Mets two runs in the third inning. After the Giants went ahead, 3-2, Kranepool hit his homer with John Milner on base in the sixth.

Mays beat out an infield hit in the seventh and advanced on a throwing error by Ed Goodson. Don Hahn then ran for Mays and scored what proved to be the winning run when Felix Millan singled. [The Sporting News]
