Ray Culp, returning from Pawtucket (International), made his first start of the season for the Red Sox and was knocked out in the second inning of a 7-5 loss to the Angels. Vada Pinson homered off Culp in the first. With two out in the second, Jeff Torborg singled and Rudy Meoli, Sandy Alomar and Pinson walked to force in Torborg. Frank Robinson then doubled to drive in Meoli and Alomar. When Tommy Harper fumbled the ball in the outfield, Pinson also scored.

Two more unearned runs off reliever Roger Moret, one in the sixth and the other in the eighth, subsequently provided the Angels with their margin of victory. Dwight Evans and Carl Yastrzemski homered for the Red Sox, Yastrzemski's blow coming with two men on base. [The Sporting News]
