Rick Wise, who pitched a no-hitter against the Reds June 23, 1971 while with the Phillies, almost achieved the feat again in hurling the Cardinals to an 8-0 victory over the Reds. Wise held the Reds hitless for 8 1/3 innings before Joe Morgan singled for the only safety off his deliveries.

The Cardinals sent Wise on the way to his victory with a seven-run outburst against Jack Billingham in the third inning. Wise and Jim Dwyer singled and Ted Sizemore was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A walk to Joe Torre forced in one run and a single by Ted Simmons plated two more. After a pass to Tim McCarver filled the sacks again, Luis Melendez hit a grand-slam homer. [The Sporting News]
