Designated hitter Jim Ray Hart knocked in two runs with a double in the seventh inning to carry the Yankees to a 2-1 victory over the Orioles. Mike Cuellar, the Orioles' loser, allowed only one hit until the seventh when a walk to Roy White, forceout by Matty Alou and single by Bobby Murcer set the stage for Hart's double.

Mel Stottlemyre, the Yankees' winner, also yielded only one hit before running into trouble in the eighth. Paul Blair walked to open the inning for the Orioles, Bobby Grich singled and Brooks Robinson sacrificed.
