Hotter than the day's 104-degree temperature, Lee May smashed three homers, driving in five runs, and Tommy Helms added a grand slam as the Astros bombed the Padres, 12-2. Cesar Cedeno also homered for the Astros to account for their initial run.

May, who hit safely in his 20th straight game for a Houston club record, hit a solo swat in the second and followed with two-run blows in the seventh and ninth. Helms' slam came in the fifth on the first pitch thrown by Mike Corkins after taking over in relief of Bill Greif with the bases loaded. Dave Winfield hit his first major league homer for the Padres.
