Reggie Cleveland yielded only three singles and the Cardinals rewarded his work by scoring three runs in the fifth inning to defeat the Cubs, 3-0. Doubles by Ted Simmons and Bernie Carbo produced the first tally to decide Cleveland's duel with Burt Hooton.

Jim Dwyer followed with a single, but Carbo slipped en route to the plate and was thrown out trying to score. Dwyer took second on the throw. After an intentional pass to Mick Kelleher, Cleveland singled to load the bases and Lou Brock followed with a single to drive in a pair of insurance markers. [The Sporting News]
