With last-inning help from Bill Gogolewski, Jim Merritt gained his first victory of the season when the Rangers defeated the Royals, 3-0. Merritt yielded only four hits. The Rangers scored once on a single by Ken Suarez and double by Jim Mason in the third inning before clinching the verdict with two more runs in the fourth on three singles, an error and a groundout.
