In a split of special significance to Ray Culp and Jesse Jefferson, who were the winning pitchers, the Red Sox captured the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, 5-1, and the Orioles came back to take the second game, 2-1, in 10 innings. Culp, who returned to the Red Sox from Pawtucket (International) two weeks ago, gained his first major league victory since last July 2. Culp was on the disabled list the last half of 1972 and underwent an operation on a torn muscle in his shoulder during the winter. The veteran righthander needed help from Bobby Bolin after giving up the Orioles' run in the eighth on a triple by Al Bumbry and sacrifice fly by Paul Blair. Rico Petrocelli had four hits for the Red Sox and drove in two of their talles.

In the nightcap, Jefferson, a rookie righthander from Rochester (International), made his first appearance for the Orioles and hurled the route, allowing seven hits. The Orioles scored the deciding run in the 10th on a double by Blair and single by Earl Williams. [The Sporting News]
