The Cardinals, who won only five of their first 25 games, finally climaxed their uphill battle and reached the .500 mark with a 33-33 record by defeating the Cubs, 3-2, in 11 innings. The Cubs forced the game into overtime with a run in the ninth on a double by Carmen Fanzone and single by Gene Hiser, but with two away in the 11th the Cardinals gained their victory with successive singles by Bernie Carbo, Jim Dwyer and Luis Melendez.
