After being held to two hits in the first eight innings, the Cubs rallied for three runs in the ninth to defeat the Mets, 3-2. Ron Hodges singled with the bases loaded in the sixth to produce the Mets' markers. Jon Matlack, working on a shutout, ran into control problems in the ninth and was lifted after giving up a walk to Glenn Beckert, single by Billy Williams and pass to Jim Hickman to load the bases.

Tug McGraw relieved and on his first pitch, Ron Santo doubled to drive in the tying tallies. After a walk to Jose Cardenal and forceout at the plate on a grounder by Randy Hundley, Don Kessinger came to bat and singled to score Santo with the winning run. [The Sporting News]
