The four-hit pitching of Burt Hooton enabled the Cubs to defeat the Mets, 5-1. The Mets' run scored in the fifth inning on a pass to Ed Kranepool, an infield out and single by Jim Fregosi. By that time however, the Cubs already had registered their five counters.

Three crossed the plate in the third on a double by Don Kessinger, single by Jose Cardenal, pass to Jim Hickman, single by Ron Santo and an error on the hit by Ed Kranepool. Hickman beat out an infield hit in the fifth, Santo was hit by a pitch and Carmen Fanzone and Randy Hundley cracked singles to add the Cubs' other runs. [The Sporting News]
