A three-run homer by designated hitter John Ellis carried the Indians to a 4-2 victory in the first game of a doubleheader, but the Red Sox exploded for 19 hits and won the second game, 16-7. Ray Culp, who started the opener for the Red Sox, retired nine straight batters before walking John Lowenstein in the fourth inning. After Oscar Gamble forced Lowenstein and George Hendrick was hit by a pitch, Ellis smashed his homer. Rico Petrocelli had a solo swat for the Red Sox. In the nlghtcap, the Red Sox attack included a two-run homer by Reggie Smith and bases-loaded triple by Bob Montgomery. [The Sporting News] |
