Sam McDowell, a winner of two previous decisions since being acquired from the Giants, was handed his first loss in a New York uniform when the Orioles defeated the Yankees, 6-3. The Orioles tagged the veteran lefthander for three runs in the third inning on a single by Andy Etchebarren, pass to Mark Belanger and singles by Bobby Grich and Tommy Davis, together with an error by Johnny Callison on Davis' hit.

Paul Blair singled and Don Baylor tripled for the deciding run in the sixth before the Orioles clinched their victory with two more runs in the eighth, one on a sacrifice fly by Baylor. Thurman Munson hit a homer for the Yankees. [The Sporting News]
