After an exchange of homers sent the game into overtime, the Cubs scored on a bases-loaded single by Jose Cardenal with one out in the 10th to defeat the Mets, 4-3. Adrian Garrett, subbing for Billy Williams, who was suffering from sore back muscles, homered in the seventh inning to put the Cubs ahead, 2-1. Ken Boswell, batting for Tom Seaver, tied the score with a round-tripper in the eighth and John Milner sent the Mets in front with another circuit clout in the ninth.

However, in the Cubs' half, Gene Hiser hit his first major league homer to tie the score again. In the 10th, a single by Don Kessinger and passes to Williams, pinch-hitting, and Rick Monday loaded the bases.
