The Cardinals, who escaped defeat on an unearned run in the eighth inning, proceeded to beat the Phillies, 2-1, when Luis Melendez delivered a run-scoring single as a pinch-hitter with two out in the 10th. The Phillies counted their tally in the fourth on a double by Cesar Tovar and triple by Greg Luzlnski, scoring pinch-runner Mike Rogodzinski. In the eighth, Ted Sizemore singled and when Wayne Twitchell threw wildly to first on a bunt by Tim McCarver, both runners were safe. After a grounder by Joe Torre, Ted Simmons was passed intentionally. Jose Cruz forced Simmons, but beat the throw to first in the Phillies' try for a double play, allowing Sizemore to score.

In the 10th, with Mac Scarce on the mound for the Phillies, Sizemore walked and McCarver sacrificed. Torre was handed an intentional pass and was forced by Simmons before Melendez batted for Cruz and won the game with a single. [The Sporting News]
