With two out in the seventh inning, the Reds exploded for four runs on homers by Pete Rose and Johnny Bench to defeat the Padres, 4-0. Jack Billingham, who pitched the shutout, gained his 10th victory. Rich Troedson, starting for the Padres, was lifted after six innings, according to pre-game plans, and Mike Corkins, who relieved, was the victim of the Reds' blows.

Rose's homer came on an inside-the-park drive that hit the right-center field fence and caromed away from the Padres' flychasers. Then, after Joe Morgan was hit by a pitch and Dan Driessen walked, Bench iced the game with a three-run blast. [The Sporting News]
