Sidelined by a pulled muscle in his right shoulder, Bobby Bonds came off the bench and hit a grand-slam homer in the seventh inning to spark the Giants to a 14-3 victory over the Astros. The Giants were losing, 3-1, when Gary Matthews and Chris Speier singled and Dave Rader was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Bonds' smash off Jim Ray, who had just taken the mound in relief for the Astros.

Having gone ahead, the Giants broke the game wide open by scoring nine runs in the ninth, with Gary Thomasson, Matthews, Garry Maddox and Speier driving in two apiece. Speier's RBIs came on a homer. [The Sporting News]
