After giving up two runs in the first two innings, Fred Norman pitched scoreless ball the rest of the route while the Reds broke away to defeat the Phillies, 8-2. Mike Schmidt homered for one of the Phillies' runs. Bobby Tolan hit a homer and run-scoring single to effect a 2-2 tie before the Reds took command with two runs in the sixth on a single by Dan Driessen, pass to Tolan and double by Dave Concepcion.

Tony Perez homered in the eighth and, after a single by Tolan, Bill Plummer also hit for the circuit. Pete Rose tripled in the ninth and counted the Reds' last run on a sacrifice fly by Joe Morgan. [The Sporting News]
