Exploding for nine runs in the 10th inning, the Red Sox gained an 11-2 victory in the second game to split a doubleheader with the White Sox, who won the first game, 6-1. Steve Stone pitched a five-hitter for the White Sox in the opener and Carlos May drove in three runs with a homer and double.

In the nightcap, Tommy Harper drove in two runs for the Red Sox with a double in the second inning and the White Sox tied the score with a homer by Buddy Bradford in the sixth. Dwight Evans opened the 10th with a double and scored on a single by Buddy Hunter. After a sacrifice by Harper, Mario Guerrero singled to drive in Hunter and took second on the throw. An intentional pass to Carl Yastrzemski and single by Orlando Cepeda loaded the bases. Rico Petrocelli singled to plate two runs. Following a pass to Rick Miller that filled the sacks again, Bob Montgomery hit a grand-slam homer.
