In a rally against Sparky Lyle, the White Sox scored two runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Yankees, 4-3. Luis Alvarado beat out an infield hit, took third on a single by Buddy Bradford and beat the throw home when Jorge Orta grounded to Horace Clarke. Eddie Leon struck out, but Pat Kelly then singled to drive in the winning run.

As a result, Wilbur Wood was able to continue his mastery of the Yankees, beating them for the eighth straight time in a string that started on July 28, 1971. [The Sporting News]
