Batting for the first time in the game after coming into the lineup as the Rangers' 17th player, Jim Mason homered with a man on base in the 12th inning to defeat the Tigers, 9-7. The Tigers had homers by Jim Northrup, Gates Brown and Willie Horton in scoring all their runs off Steve Dunning. Jim Kremmel, Jackie Brown and Bill Gogolewski pitched scoreless relief for the Rangers in the last 7 2/3 innings with the victory going to Gogolewski, his first of the season.

The Rangers, after falling behind, 7-4, picked up two runs on a homer by Bill Sudakis in the seventh inning and tied the score in the eighth after a single by Vic Harris, who became the first Ranger player to collect five hits in one game. Harris took third on a single by Alex Johnson and beat the throw home to score on Rico Carty's grounder to Norm Cash. [The Sporting News]
