Pitching out of two bases-loaded threats, John Hiller saved the Tigers' 5-4 victory over the Rangers. The Tigers, after picking up three runs in the first two innings, added another tally on a homer by Dick Sharon in the third. Joe Coleman was kayoed by the Rangers in the seventh, giving up three runs, but Hiller got Tom Grieve to pop up, struck out Pete Mackanin, walked Dave Nelson to load the bases and fanned Vic Harris. Sharon then hit his second homer of the game in the Tigers' half of the eighth.

Jeff Burroughs homered for the Rangers in the ninth. The Rangers then proceeded to load the bases with none out, but Hiller struck out Nelson, induced Harris to ground into a forceout at the plate and retired Alex Johnson on a fly. [The Sporting News]
