The Reds won the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, 2-1, in a duel between Jack Billingham and Tom Seaver, but the Mets came back with a rush to capture the nightcap, 7-5. The Reds scored both their runs off Seaver in the third inning. Darrel Chaney doubled and crossed the plate when Pete Rose singled. Rose rounded first on his hit and was thrown out trying to get back to the bag. However, Joe Morgan followed with a homer to produce what proved to be the winning run. Billingham, who gained his 13th victory on Friday the 13th, yielded only two hits, both in the fourth when the Mets scored on a single by Wayne Garrett and double by Cleon Jones.

In the nightcap, the Mets bunched five hits with an error and sacrifice fly for four runs in the first inning, routing Jim McGlothlin. After the Mets added a tally on a homer by Jones in the second, Garrett knocked in the two deciding runs with a single in the eighth. [The Sporting News]
