The Cardinals ruined the major league debut of Frank Snook, rookie rlghthander from Alexandria (Texas), by breaking a tie with two runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Padres, 5-3. Ted Simmons, the first batter to face Snook, who took over in relief in the ninth, reached second base on an error by Dwain Anderson and scored on a double by Luis Melendez. Mike Tyson followed with a triple. Dave Roberts and Johnny Grubb hit homers for the Padres. An old-timers' game, which was part of the night's program, helped the Padres attract a crowd of 25,483.
