The Mets broke a 2-2 tie with three runs in the ninth inning and defeated the Reds, 5-2. Jerry Grote led off with a triple and gave way to pinch-runner Ted Martinez, who scored on a passed ball by Johnny Bench on a 3-2 pitch to Duffy Dyer, who reached first safely. Dyer was out trying for third on a single by Wayne Garrett, but Felix Millan followed with a homer for the final two runs. The Reds had a circuit clout by Andy Kosco.
