Willie Mays hit his fourth homer of the season and 658th of his career to save the Mets from a shutout in a 3-1 loss to the Reds. Ross Grimsley pitched a four-hitter for the Reds, who sent him on his way to victory with two runs in the fourth inning on a pass to Joe Morgan, double by Dave Concepcion, single by Johnny Bench, sacrifice by Andy Kosco and sacrifice fly by Bobby Tolan.
